The Kiwa Ranch Experience
Drought has forced ranchers to leave their land. Now the wildlife has taken over! In this recreated abandoned ranch, lions shade themselves beneath the wings of the bush plane or on the veranda of the ranch house. Venomous snakes slither in the master bedroom and garden.

Monkeys wreak havoc in the guest quarters. Scorpions and spiders fill in the nooks and crannies of the house. Leopards lounge in the barn and neighboring trees. Cheetah scan the terrain and a herd of giraffe wander through the grounds and neighboring forest - all on land never before seen by Zoo guests north of the original garden.


Kiwa Ranch - Phase Two
While the cheetah have arrived, there’s more work to be done for them. As part of the Zoo’s Strategic Plan, an expanded lion habitat in the southern zoo will remove a redundant exhibit and prepare us for Species Survival Plan® recommendations to breed purebred South African lions.

This will enable the rare striped hyenas that are now sharing the cheetah habitat to move into a larger space. At the same time, utilities required for the northern infrastructure lay the foundation for the next critical steps in bringing Kiwa Ranch to reality over the next few years.
